NHS Wales – Easy Read Direct Payments for Continuing NHS Healthcare

May 2026 | A guide about new direct payment rules.

We worked with NHS Wales to create an Easy Read version of this information guide.

The guide explains new changes in the law under the Health and Social Care Wales Act 2025. From April 2026, people in Wales who get Continuing NHS Healthcare can ask for direct payments to help pay for their care and support.

These changes are designed to give disabled people and people with serious health conditions more choice and control over how their care is planned and managed. The new rules also support people’s rights and independence.

The Easy Read guide explains what Continuing NHS Healthcare is and how direct payments work. It includes information about who can apply, what the payments can be used for, and what support is available.

The guide also explains the safeguards that help keep people safe. This includes how the money should be managed, how care plans are reviewed, and what happens if a person’s needs change over time.

We also made a Welsh Easy Read version of the guide. Both versions are digitally accessible to work with screen readers and assistive technology.

Press the red View and download this resource button to open the accessible PDF of the Easy Read guide.
