0:12
First off, don’t assume prior knowledge.
0:15
These are words and ideas that you use a lot so you know what they mean, but others may not.
0:21
Don’t assume that your readers know the subject and the words and phrases you use.
0:27
Your readers may not be familiar with them and what they actually mean.
0:33
Here’s some examples.
0:35
Instead of This project is for young people, try this project is for people under 21 years old.
0:42
Be clear what you mean by young people instead of the party will be on Bonfire night, try the party will be on Tuesday the 5th of November, Bonfire Night.
0:54
Your reader may not remember the date of Bonfire night.
0:59
Put ideas in the right order.
1:01
Write down the key points the reader needs to know.
1:07
Sort them into what people need to know first, second, third, and so on.
1:14
Put the information in the order of any actions or decisions the reader needs to take.
1:21
Also, be consistent.
1:25
Use the same words and phrases consistently, even if it sounds repetitive.
1:32
Don’t use different words or phrases to say the same thing like bicycle, cycle, and bike.
1:39
Here are some more examples.
1:40
If you use the word delegates, don’t use alternatives like attendees or participants.
1:47
Or if you use the word council, don’t use alternatives like local authority or local council.
1:55
Thinking about sentences have no more than 12 to 15 words in each sentence.
2:01
If you have a long sentence, you can split it into two or more short sentences.
2:07
You can use bullet point lists to help break up and organise information.
2:15
Use 1 clear idea in each sentence.
2:19
Keep your sentences simple that have a clear meaning.
2:23
Make sure your sentences do not have more than one meaning.
2:28
Use simple punctuation like full stops, commas, and question marks.
2:33
Try to avoid other things like colons, semicolons or hyphens and don’t use contractions.
2:41
For example, write do not instead of don’t.
2:46
So in summary, don’t assume prior knowledge, put ideas in the right order, be consistent, use simple punctuation, keep sentences short and put 1 clear idea in each sentence.
