All Wales Therapeutics and Toxicology Centre – Easy Read Self-administration of medicines
August 2026 | Information for patients about taking your own medicines while in hospital.
We worked with the All Wales Therapeutics and Toxicology Centre to create an Easy Read version of their information about self-administering medicines in hospital.
The information explains how patients can manage their own medicines safely during a hospital stay, when it’s the right choice for them. It explains what self-administration is, how decisions are made, what support is available, and how to manage medicines safely.
The booklet helps people understand how managing their own medicines can help them feel more independent and confident while in hospital. It also explains important safety steps, including keeping medicines secure, taking the right dose, and telling staff about any problems or unwanted effects.
Alongside this, we made a similar Easy Read booklet for parents and carers. This explains how they can support someone they care for to take their medicines safely while in hospital.
By making this information easier to understand, we helped the All Wales Therapeutics and Toxicology Centre make important healthcare information more accessible, for patients with a learning disability and others who need information in a clearer format.
We also created a Welsh Easy Read version of the booklet. Both versions are digitally accessible and designed to work with screen readers and other assistive technology.
