Introduction to Easy Read Words and language Part 1 In this video we will look at the style of language we use when writing easy read.
0:11
First off, remember to use simple language.
0:14
Use words and sentences that are easy to understand.
0:18
Use simple and clear language that people use in everyday conversation.
0:25
It’s important to use age appropriate language.
0:28
Use words and language that fit the age of the people you are writing for.
0:33
Children, adults or older adults may relate to different words.
0:39
Talk directly to the reader.
0:43
Use sentences with words like you and we in them.
0:48
Say what the reader has to do or what they can do.
0:53
Say directly what you will do or can do.
0:57
Let’s have a look at some examples.
1:00
Instead of drinks are available at the bar, try you can buy a drink at the bar or instead of you’re accompanied by your support worker, try your support worker when with you.
1:14
Avoid difficult words and terms.
1:17
Use simpler alternatives where you can.
1:22
If you cannot use a simple alternative, explain the word or term clearly when you use it.
1:28
You can also list all the hard words and their meaning at the back of the document.
1:35
Some examples here could be instead of Bethany has a fractured ulna, try saying Bethany has a broken arm.
1:44
Or you have an appointment with your dermatologist.
1:48
Explain that difficult word.
1:50
Dermatologist.
1:51
A dermatologist is a doctor that helps people with skin problems.
1:57
Next up, avoid abbreviations.
1:59
Don’t use acronyms or abbreviations unless they are very well known.
2:05
They are only useful if your reader knows what they stand for.
2:10
Some examples here to avoid would be things like FAQ, GPS or TBC, but well known ones that are OK to use would be things like BBC, NHS or ITV.
2:27
Don’t use metaphors or idioms.
2:30
These are phrases that say one thing but mean another.
2:34
These sentences cannot be understood based on the meaning of the words alone.
2:39
Some people understand language literally.
2:42
This makes phrases like pull your socks up quite confusing.
2:47
Some examples here would be instead of we’re all in the same boat, try saying we are all in the same situation or instead of the journey was a nightmare, the journey was long and uncomfortable.
3:04
So going back over what we’ve covered so far, use simple clear language.
3:10
Avoid difficult words and terms.
3:13
Use age appropriate language, use direct language, avoid abbreviations and don’t use metaphors or idioms.
